But what is the little fire symbol on some threads? Does it make them exempt from the "delete after 2 days of no new posts" rule?

The symbols are explained at the bottom of the front page. The fire icon means the topic is popular (has a certain amount of replies in it).

Just to clarify, only posts in the Quest Board section are affected by this.
