An idea for a possible forum game.
The MTG Forum Game
Basically like a regular game of Magic, just slightly altered for forum play. All the regular rules apply but there will be certain guidelines to not make this too complicated to follow.
These guidelines are...
Deck Construction:
Let me know what you think.
Basically like a regular game of Magic, just slightly altered for forum play. All the regular rules apply but there will be certain guidelines to not make this too complicated to follow.
These guidelines are...
Deck Construction:
- Spoiler:
- Your library will consist of 10 creature spells, 7 sorcery/instant spells, 5 enchantment spells and 5 artifact spells. That's a total of 27 spells. The land and planewalker permanent type are exempt from this game. Your library will not be known to the other players unless an ability allows them to.
Every player picks a reprentive planeswalker card before the start of the game. A Player may only cast spells, or activate abilities, of the colours their planeswalker represents. So if your planeswalker is green, you may play any spell or activate any ability that could be cast/activated with green mana. If it requires another mana type, you may not cast or activate it.
- Spoiler:
- Each turn will have 5 phases as normal; beginning, 1st main phase, combat phase, 2nd main phase and end phase. There will be no hands in this game so the draw is exempt from the the beginning phase.
Now, in a regular game of Magic players are able to cast instant spells and activate abilities during another players turn. I could easily put this mechanic into the forum game, but it would require making a post for each phase in your turn and allow people to respond. I think this could potentially be too complicated so for now nobody may cast instants or activate abilities during other player's turns, aside from the combat phase which I will explain later.
- Spoiler:
- Each turn of the game, each player will gain priority and be able to post their turn. The post will look something like this;
Beginning phase: Untapped all tapped permanents.
Upkeep: List of abilities that activate during the upkeep and their effects.
First main phase: List of any spells you cast, their abilities and/or their effects. List
of any abilities you activate and their effects.
Combat phase: List of declared attackers and their power/toughness, targets, any abilities that get activated during this phase and any instants you cast. Blockers will be listed by defending players and damage calculated after. Any defending player may cast instants or activate abilities during a combat phase. So if you aren't being targeted, you may not respond to the combat phase.
Second main phase: Same as 1st main phase.
End phase: List of any abilities that activate during this phase and their effects.
To cast spells and pay activation costs you will pay life instead of mana. To accomodate this, each player will start out with 100 life and can lose or gain it regularly. All non-permanent spells are sent to the graveyard after use and may not be played again unless a certain ability allows it. Any destroyed permanents also go to the graveyard, any exiled cards go into exile as well. For the most part, all the same rules apply to this game.
After each player has taken their turn there will be a review post by the GM. This will include, but is not limited to, an update on player's life points, their number of
permanents currently on the field and their number of spells in the graveyard/exile. Any players that have lost that turn will also be mentioned in the review post.
- Spoiler:
- Winning: To win you must be the last player with life points and permanents on the field.
Losing: You lose if; your life becomes 0, you have no more castable spells and no
permanents on the field, declaring defeat.
Any spells or abilities that make people win or lose are usable in this game as long as they don't require a mana payment to activate. Since we basically have 100 free mana at the start it would be pretty easy to win this way.
- Spoiler:
- Tokens: Tokens are allowed in this but it is up to the player to keep track of them. An updated token count is required each turn.
Counters: Counters are allowed in this game but it's up to the player to keep track of them. An updated counter count is required each turn.
- Spoiler:
- Drawing cards, discarding cards, land/mana, world enchantments and planewalkers. Any abilities or activation costs requiring or resulting in the drawing/discarding of cards are not allowed to be used in this game. Any effects or payments that require you to reveal a card are active, the revealed card is chosen by the holding player always. Revealing a card from your hand and revealing a card from your library are combined effects for this game.
All mana is paid with an equal amount of life. Any payments containing X has no
restrictions. So if an ability is "Pay X mana: Deal X amount of damage to target creature or player" feel free to use your entire life to do so.
Let me know what you think.

This sounds pretty cool. I hope this takes off. I can't think of any improvements right now.
